A Happy Sushi Lover

May 05, 2008

Emma with her Sushi Toy We got this awesome photo from Emma the pug playing with her Bone Maki Sushi Toy.  Here is what Nilda, Emma’s mom, had to say about the Sushi Toy.

This is Emma’s absolute favorite toy at my house. It is a sushi roll and it squeaks. It had been a present for Lucy’s 1st birthday, but Emma took possession of it when she came to live with us last year.  This is actually sushi toy #2. She totally loved Sushi toy #1 to death. We had to throw it away. It took us a while to order her a new one. We waited until Lucy needed a new harness to place the order. It arrived yesterday and you’ve never seen a happier puggy, it’s as if they had never been apart.

Thanks so much for sharing Nilda and Emma!

Spring Flowers

Mar 26, 2008

In many parts of the country, Winter is finally starting to give way to Spring and you may be starting to see signs of life in your garden again.  Popular Spring flowers like tulips and daffodils may be starting to bloom and while these blooms are a welcome sight and signs of better weather to come take caution if you have a curious pup.  If ingested, tulips and daffodils can be toxic to dogs.

To ensure that you and your pup have a safe and healthy spring, be sure to visit the ASPCA’s website to see a complete list of plants that are dangerous to pets if ingested.

Offspring

Mar 24, 2008

While doing a completely unrelated search the other day, I came across an interesting and astonishing animal factoid.

If none of the animals are spayed, a female dog, her mate, their puppies and all the resulting puppies down the line can produce 67,000 dogs in just 6 years!

Giving Back

Mar 16, 2008

CamiWe have been a long time advertiser on Bringing Up Shelby and one of the reasons we love to advertise on the site is that the advertising money is donated to a pug charity.  This time, a donation was made to Pug PROS and the money was earmarked for Cami a pug currently in hospice care.

It is true honor to be a sponsor of Bringing Up Shelby.  Reading about Shelby is incredibly entertaining and it is great that they so generously give back to the pug community.

Very Superstitious

Mar 07, 2008

I recently came across a list of dog superstitions.  Here are a few of my favorites for your amusement.

  • A dog eating grass means it will rain soon.
  • If a newborn baby is licked by a dog it means the baby will be a fast healer.
  • Meeting a dog, especially a Dalmatian, is considered good luck.
  • Three white dogs together is a sign of good luck.

I can’t say that I hold much faith in these superstitions.  My pugs eat grass in yard all the time and it never seems to rain.  But, I do find it fascinating how people have looked to their dogs to add meaning to life’s occurrences.  Unfortunately, most of the superstitions I came across regarding dogs were pretty ominous.  It seems many believe that dogs have a keen sense of when death and misfortune might strike.

National Opposable Thumbs Day

Mar 03, 2008

Hard to believe, but today is What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day.  I never really thought much about it, but I think my pugs would get into a lot more trouble if they had thumbs.  First thing I’m sure they would learn to do is open the refrigerator door.  They would probably also master the lid on the treat jar pretty quickly as well.  The more I think about it, the more I am glad that dogs don’t have thumbs!  What about your dog, what kind of trouble would they get in if they had thumbs?

Winter Project - Make your own dog tags

Feb 20, 2008

FasTags Dog ID Tags

Winter is still in full force in many parts of the US and you may just be starting to get cabin fever after the very chilly and snowy winter.  Well, we have a cool project for you and your family - make your own dog tags.

FasTags Dog Tags allow you to create your own dog id tags in a few easy steps.  Simply write your dog’s information on the tag and then bake the tag in the oven.  Reminiscent of the “Shrinky Dink” days, the tag will shrink once heated in the oven.

Making your own dog id tags is a great project to do with the kids or fun way to spend the afternoon on a wintry day.

What’s in a name?

Feb 18, 2008

Henry aka H. Doodle

I am frequently asked how I came up with the name H. Doodle for the shop.  When asked this question I always laugh because it is a long, kinda silly story.

H. Doodle was inspired by my pug Henry.  When Henry was a puppy, we inevitably started calling him “Hank.” Hank quickly turned to “Hanky” and pretty soon we were singing him the song “Yankee Doodle” substituting in Hanky for Yankee of course.  Somehow, after that, the only nickname that stuck for Henry was “Doodle.” Henry took to the name and pretty soon that was what he would answer to best.

When I decided to start the online shop, the one name that kept sticking in my head was H. Doodle.  The “H” is a tribute to Henry’s real name and “Doodle” is his nickname.  After all, it was my love of buying unique items for my pugs that inspired me to open the store, so I felt it was only fitting to name the store after Henry, the most entrepreneurial of my three.

The store may be named after Henry, but my other pugs Benjamin & Luna play a big role.  They, along with Mr. Doodle, are our official product testers.  Before we bring any item into the store, we let the pugs try it out to see how they like it.  They really seem to enjoy their jobs!  Henry is not only the president of H. Doodle, but he is also a client!
